Object Writing

So, I started a program through Berklee’s extension school in music production and technology so that I could be a better rounded musician, and hopefully also a producer.  For my electives I’m actually taking songwriting courses because it is the one thing I really want to improve.  The course so far is really, really fun.  We have to do daily “object writing” which is exactly what it sounds like.  We have to write about an object for 5 to 10 minutes.  The idea is to be as sensually descriptive as possible.  How does the scene taste, smell, feel and all that.  I wanted to post one that I was particularly proud of (my first one even!).  The word was “feather.”

A feather, like the one I tattooed on my right leg.  It symbolizes an eternal struggle for life.  How many tries must it have taken to arrive at those vibrant colors?  A deep blue like the ocean is beautiful from the sky, but beneath the undulating surface it’s a tempest.  Fluttering silver scales give way to a red cloud of blood, but next they meet the scales won’t so easily catch the eye.  A splash of orange is a signal to a lover that you are strong, that your father was strong and that your children will be strong.  A splash of orange is a signal to your hunter that you are heavy, burdened with the weight of your own beauty.

Anyway, I’ll post more from time to time if I like them.  Hopefully they will inspire some new songs soon!
