The New Me™: 2010 Edition.

Every year I like to make myself over.  Last year it was the rollerblades, and the year before that it was the ill-advised whole-body Botox.  This year, the New Me™ is all about time management!  That’s right!  My life is going to be in ORDER and I’m going to free up so much mismanaged time and fill all that time up with new hobbies!

I’m just kidding…well, about the whole-body Botox.  I am trying to manage my time a little better.  I’m not really in any classes anymore so I can’t use a class schedule to anchor my life.  I made myself a new schedule where I get up everyday at 7, exercise (Katie: “The theme of 2010 is fitness!”) for an hour and then get to lab by 9:30.  That’s 9:30 in the morning.  It’s a tough schedule for me, but I’ve been pretty successful so far (read: I’ve done it 5 times).

You also might remember about a year ago when I was trying to find a place to volunteer to change the world by completing some overlooked but essential task for 5 or so hours a week.  You might also recall that I couldn’t find a place and that the places I did talk to never returned my calls and evidently did not want my help (WHY?!).  Well, those days are OVER people, because I found a place that I am going to inflict my love on.  Or should I say, I found a place on which I will inflict my love!  One mustn’t get in the habit of ending sentences with prepositions!  Ha ha!  I am going to volunteer at 826 Michigan.  If you’ve never heard of 826, it’s a series of organizations (the original started by Dave Eggers) that help kiddies learn to write effectively.  Now, I’m not sure how this will work out, but I’m pretty excited about it, particularly because I’m often referred to as the modern-day Proust.  Or at least I’m trying to get that started.

Lake Folk is blowing up in a big way too.  That’s something else I’m trying to get started.  We haven’t been actively scheduling any shows because we’re trying to finish up our last few songs and hit the studio for our first LP, but Crazy Wisdom Tea Room and a folk-friend of ours asked us to play, and we can’t say no.  We’re playing with several other folksy people at the Elks Lodge this evening and we’re playing at Crazy Wisdom on the 23rd.  We are also in the market for a drummer, both for studio recording and likely for keeps.  We got a few interested folks on Craigslist, but we’re all a little worried about preserving what we in the bizz like to call “band culture.”  By “band culture” I mean we want to find someone who likes to play Mario before practice, who likes guacamole and who thinks that fart jokes during practice are funny.  Know anyone?
